Typically, there are four different categories of workplace injuries.
- Single accident injuries: As the name implies, these injuries are the result of one solitary event. Falling down the stairs, for example, would be a single accident. As would dropping a heavy box on your foot or suffering an industrial machinery accident. These can be crush injuries, traumatic brain injuries or broken bones.
- Repetitive stress injuries: These are injuries or conditions built up over time. Muscle damage, for example, from constantly lifting and moving boxes from one place to another. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an example of a repetitive stress injury and can take years to develop.
- Vehicle accident injuries: Some occupations require workers to drive during the completion of a work task. Construction workers, delivery drivers and other drivers might suffer a serious injury in a vehicle accident while working. Injuries can include brain damage, spinal cord injuries, paralysis or amputation depending on the severity of the collision.
- Hazardous environment injuries: It is not uncommon for workers to handle dangerous chemicals or breathe in toxic fumes while working. While employers typically offer protective equipment or safeguard against injury, injuries still occur. Typically, conditions such as mesothelioma or asbestosis represent a body’s reaction to a toxic work environment.
